Does the U.S. Department of Justice Recognize the Coordination?
In a law review article published in the “Natural Resources and Environment” Summer 1997 edition, the Principle Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Peter D. Coppelman noted the important role of local government in federal land management decisions and pointed to the specific language in FLPMA that acknowledges local government’s coordinate role.
“Federal law requires that opinions of local government officials be taken into account in federal land planning processes. …FLPMA, for example, provides that where BLM lands are involved, the Secretary of Interior and his designees will ‘keep apprised of’ and ‘assure that consideration is given to’ local land use plans as well as provide opportunities for ‘meaningful public involvement of local officials in development of federal land use plans.’” “The Federal Government’s Response to the County Supremacy Movement” articleAmerican Stewards of Liberty
