FAQ about Local Outreach

What Issues do you help people with?

Through the coordination process we have helped people deal with endangered species, power lines, super highways, grazing restrictions, smart growth, wilderness plans, heritage area plans, travel management plans, water restrictions and many other critical issues.  We train your local leaders how to deal with these issues through the coordination process and help them assert their coordinate authority with the federal and state issues. Once a community learns how to coordinate, it can protect itself from all other threats to its local economy and productive use of land.

Unfortunately, we do not have the resources or the staff to take on individual disputes, but we may be able to recommend a good attorney for your situation.

Who do we contact for help?

You can call or email our office to find out if we can help you.  Our telephone number is 512-365-2699.  Our email address is asl@americanstewards.us.  Please provide a brief description of your issue so that we can direct the inquiry to the appropriate expert.

How much does your help cost?

Our work is primarily funded by contributions from people like you.  This allows us to provide our help to communities whether or not they can afford the services.  However, we do charge a nominal $1500 annual fee to local governments to help off-set the expenses. When we help a community we also ask them to cover travel expenses and the fees of experts and attorneys in the event their issue requires this level of attention.

Many hours go into researching and helping a community prepare specific strategies.  It is not uncommon for one of our experts to devote a full week of time developing action plans for a community and training its leaders just to get them started.  There are also many follow up hours necessary to help respond to agency letters and move the process forward.  We encourage the citizens and local organizations to make extra contributions to help offset these expenses.  We are also very appreciative when the people we are helping join as members, as this is one of the best ways to strengthen our efforts well into the future.

What does the fee cover?

Your community may be in various stages of the coordination process and may not need all of the suggested services, however, below is list of work we can provide depending on the needs of your community.

  1. Draft or Edit Resolution Adopting Coordination;
  2. Draft or Edit Policy Statement for Adoption by Local Entity;
  3. Draft or Edit Notice Letter to Proper Agencies;
  4. Development of Local Strategy and Research Issue*;
  5. Draft Agenda for First Meeting with Agency;
  6. Help Guide Meeting Preparation with Local Representatives via telephone**;
  7. Answer Questions and Provide Assistance Throughout One Year Membership;
  8. Receive All Publications and Analysis Produced by ASL for Membership.

How do we sign up for your Local Outreach program?

If you have gone through the “Coordination Class” and know you want to initiate coordination, simply call or email our offices and let us know that you would like our on-going help.  We will want to visit with you to make sure we understand your goals and the issues needing resolution and that we can help you achieve these.  We will then send you a letter that can be discussed and approved by the elected leaders of the local government to begin the process.
